I grew up mostly an average to small size weight, but if I am honest, and my sister would tell on me if I wasn’t, I always had a larger backside. When I was younger I could eat anything I wanted and pretty much anything I wanted with the exception of milk products. This would change as I got older – not just the allergies and sensitivities, but the weight.
Many women deal with weight gain after the birth of a child, but after my first, I dropped most of the weight I had gained and since I was underweight when I got pregnant, that didn’t seem like a bad thing. The thing was though that when I was pregnant with her, she was using up most of the nutrition I was eating and the doctor had put me on 6 meals a day with snacks in between meals diet. That can be hard to break when you have had to do that for nearly 4 months. At first, it didn’t seem to make a difference as I was breastfeeding. But once that ended, I realized that I needed to scale back the amount of food I was eating because it was beginning to show on the scale.I was still very active at that age so although I was now of average weight it wouldn’t really play a role until I got pregnant 8 years later with my second child.
I gained weight rather rapidly and not as much of it came off after my son was born. I actually had to “diet” to drop most of the weight, but there would be an extra 10 that would hang on. I’m sure you ladies can relate.
Stress in my relationship with my 2nd husband and a failing marriage turned to eating and a couple more pounds went on. After the divorce, I experienced some financial stressors and a medical problem that would leave me unable to care for myself for a few months. Being a single Mom was very stressful and unhealthy eating habits began creeping in. Sometimes it was just easier to give in than take a stand on proper eating. I was juggling finances as a business owner and single Mom and having to raise 2 children with unsupportive fathers and it was taking a big toll on me.
Funny how we can justify almost anything when we are feeling defeated or depressed. I was both and feeling like the world was spinning out of control. I’ve had a life full of ups and downs like most people and I was losing weight and feeling incredibly proud of myself for turning things around when my significant other was diagnosed with terminal cancer and one of my children with a life-threatening disease at the same time. You can imagine perhaps what that does to any good habits you have been trying to manage. After Justin, my significant other died, I put on 50 pounds in a little more than 3 months. Binge eating became a problem – one I had never experienced prior to that time. My sympathies to anyone who is or has ever struggled with that one.
During the last 10 years, I became involved with Neora, a company based out of Dallas TX that brings together the best in science with the best in nature – clean meets performance based products that deliver on their promises. Not only did I now have access to incredible products, but I had a community that surrounded me with love and support. I’m not sure where I would be today if I hadn’t decided to start that little side gig. But this isn’t about that, but I mention this because 2 years ago they launched NeoraFit – a weight management program and support system, that allowed me to make small incremental changes to my lifestyle that over time as developed (or in many cases) reintroduced those simple healthy choices we all have the ability to do. I lost 32 pounds that first year and another 6 at the start of the 2nd year and then I “fell off the wagon” sort to speak. I continued to take the daily supplements (the health benefits alone warranted doing that), but I started making not so healthy choices and eating foods I knew were not good for me.
Why do we do that? Why is it that we do the thing we know is not in our best interest? I’m not here to answer those questions, but I do want to say that over the last 6 months with all those unhealthy choices, I didn’t gain back any of that weight I lost! How is that possible? Those healthy supplements have trained my body to keep metabolizing fats and burning brown fat as well as turning white fat into brown fat. Simple daily disciplines are slowly beginning to creep back into my life and though I’m not always successful in making the right healthy choices, I am making progress towards losing the remaining weight I want to release AND building a healthy lifestyle that others can mimic.
