Do Goals REALLY Matter?

Goals are very powerful tools that when correctly and consistently utilized can pull you (and your organization or family) forward to successfully realizing your dreams. The vision is the picture of us fulfilling our mission, whether it is our own personal mission or that of our organization/family. Those goals need to be shared with others. Effective leaders are visionary and keep their vision before the group. They model the way and align their personal mission and vision with that of the company. They help others to see the vision. Not a leader? No worries, you are still leading yourself. That makes you a leader! So, keep your mission and vision in front of you. Post it everywhere until you know it by heart. Mine resides on my bathroom mirror and is written out at the beginning of every month on my Monthly Mindset pages I create.

We can even tie this into our last discussion about our weight. Having a vision of what you want to look like and working towards that vision can be very powerful OR it can be detrimental to your phsychy. You don’t want to be setting unrealistic expectations, but you want to be stretching yourself so you have the motivation to complete the steps needed to reach your vision of yourself.

The Power of a Shared Vision

Every time a new person sees the vision (or you see it again) it adds energy and life to the vision and pushes it closer to becoming reality. Let’s pretend for a moment that vision is the sail on a boat that is powered only by the “wind” blowing into that sail. We need to travel from Newport to Block Island to reach our full vision. As each person that boards our boat sees the vision (lounging on the beach beneath the bluffs with a cool drink in their hand) their “wind” is added to the sail and we begin skimming across the water breaking through the waves (problems) that have to be overcome in order to reach our desired destination (vision). This holds true whether you are sharing this with your family, your team, your organization or even just with friends who love and support you. It also means that the more you see it, you add wind in your sails! What you focus on GROWS!!!

Your vision must be strong enough to draw you to it and not away from it. Vision must be strong enough to have the momentum RISE not fall. Think of vision as a rubber band. If you place both hands inside the rubber band, one on top of the other, and pull your hands apart creating tension, you will feel that the rubber band wants your hands to come back together. You can control the direction. That is powerful! You will want the vision (the top hand) to be strong enough to pull the present reality (lower hand) upward towards the vision. An important piece of knowledge to keep in mind however is that if you pull your hands too far apart, or if your vision is too far from your reality, the rubber band breaks. If there is too little tension you will fall further away from your vision.

What Does My Brain Have to Do With It?

Let’s look at the way our brain functions. This will give us some insight on how we can achieve goals, change habits, and grow and use vision to our advantage. There are three components that we will discuss. First there is our consciousness. It perceives reality through our senses. It collects data and associates and evaluates the data as it enters your mind and decides what is of value and should be stored. It is the part of your brain that decides whether something requires action. It is your reality or your judgment.

The second part of your brain is the subconscious. It records and stores your “reality” and handles the automatic activities or habits that we have created. It doesn’t judge any of the information it receives. It is unbiased and operates according to your current reality.

The third part of your brain is the creative subconscious. It is the controlling part of your brain that resolves conflict, reduces tension and creatively solves problems. Its primary job is to make sure you act like you! It provides the drive and energy necessary to keep you in your “reality”.

This creative subconscious maintains your vision of who you are. You are what you “believe” yourself to be. So if you believe you can – you can! If it isn’t like you, your creative subconscious blinds you to it. In other words you don’t see it – not at all! So, the trick is to visualize your goals daily to create the belief that you have already achieved it or at least that you know what it will feel like when you do. As you take action each day, your creative subconscious maintains your vision of who you are. If you practice your visualizations you will begin to create a shift in what your brain believes is you and you will automatically start moving towards accomplishing your goals to fulfill that vision of who you are that you have planted in your creative subconscious.

You Have The Power!

YOU have the power to create the life of your dreams. Make the commitment to your future self today.

You can also use this same power as you approach menopause. If you focus on only the negative, you will grow its power over you.If you look for and focus on the positive, you will receive more of those positive things. That is not to say to put your rose-colored glasses on and pretend. What I mean is share the positive with others and they will share their positive with you. Learn what they are doing to live their best life despite hormone imbalances and challenges they may be facing. Be sure to share with others what is working for you and you will learn even more!

Tune in as I dive deeper into things you can be doing to combat menopausal changes that interfere with your best life!
