Do I Really Need to Starve Myself on Vacation TOO?
Most people gain 5-20 pounds on vacation. Unfortunately, women in menopause tend to be at the higher end of that gain, and it is harder for us to take it off. If you are like me, you’ve struggled with this, and some of that extra weight is still there the next time you go on vacation or celebrate the holidays. What can you do?
Do I Cut Out ALL the Great Food and Drinks When I Travel?
No, you don’t. I’m finding a few tricks that help me to have the foods and drinks and keep the weight gain to a minimum or not gain at all! How do you ask? There are a few simple things I’ve found to help me. The first is to drink a lot of water. Not a water drinker? You might want to get started! Drinking water instead of any other fluid helps you not only stay hydrated but also helps you feel full and helps to flush out toxins. Start increasing your intake of water before you leave for vacation. If you are flying, have a glass of water before you have that coffee or cocktail. It will help to balance things out.
Next, do as much walking as you can. I started increasing the time I spent on my morning walks before I leave for vacation. One, it helps build up stamina for all the walking I’ll be doing while visiting the sites. Two, it helps to slim me down before I eat all the goodies! The more exercise you do while on vacation, the better your metabolism will be for powering off those extra calories. You don’t need to find time for the gym. If you are sightseeing, park the car and walk. If you are on a tour, get off the tour bus and walk around it before and after you see the sights! Park the car further away from the restaurant instead of at the front door.
This leads me to all the great food and drink! Don’t overindulge! Have the cheesecake, but a small slice, or share it with someone else. Have the wine, but order a glass instead of the bottle. After the first glass, you don’t usually enjoy it as much as the first, anyway. Here is another great tip. Having my Cake & Eating it Too ~
Here is how my most recent travels went – I packed a daily supply of my NeoraFit supplements and a bag of Neora’s Plant Based Protein Powder in my suitcase and checked the bag. If you aren’t checking the bag, the Protein Powder will definitely get looked at by security so be sure to bring an unopened bag. I also brought a refillable water bottle to take with me to the Zoo, Safari Park, Sea World and other attractions in San Diego. I also tend to stay at AirBnBs than in hotels, but if you stay at a hotel, be sure you ask if you have a fridge and if they have a blender in the room. If they don’t, pack a small hand-held frother. You can get them nearly anywhere.
Each morning when I made my coffee to start my day, I would add my Slim & Skin and a ½ scoop of Protein Powder to my first cup of coffee. This helped to kick start my day. I also pack a box of the Youth Factor with me and will have a sleeve of this in my first water bottle. This gives me lots of energy for the day. If I’ve been doing a lot of walking, this morning routine also helps repair sore, tired muscles.
Before we head out the door for our day I will be sure to drink another bottle of water and sleeve of Block and Balance, and my EHT & Youth Factor Tablet to take with my lunch. It fits nicely in my purse. If we won’t be returning before dinner, I will have a protein shake made with the NeoraFit Protein Powder, and I’ll mix it with Almond Milk (usually half unsweetened original and half dark chocolate) and add some fruit to it. It tastes like a treat, and it will keep me full, so I have a light lunch or dinner.
My sister and I shared appetizers for lunch or would split our meals, so we got to taste a few dishes but didn’t feel obligated to eat 2 portions! Dinners would also be shared either amongst the table or with another friend or family member. We love visiting breweries out in San Diego, so ordering a small flight or even just 2 5 oz glasses was more than enough alcohol to satisfy and not add too many calories. Even when we would just go out to eat and not do shopping or sightseeing, we would walk as much as possible.
Normally I don’t walk over 10,000 steps a day, but on vacation, I definitely do. If you are not going to a place where you will be doing a lot of walking, find another activity like swimming, jogging, or just stretch out each morning and evening with some Yoga or Pilates. Adding in enjoyable activities doesn’t seem like a chore to be avoided when you are on vacation. It matters more that you are moving your body than lifting weights.
Get some sleep! You can end your day with a little treat of NeoraFit Cleanse and Calm. I put mine in hot water and enjoy sipping it after dinner or when we get back from our excursions. I combine that with the Wellness Chews Sleep Formula before bed to ensure I get a great night’s sleep. If the day has been extra hard on my body, I’ll put a little more Protein Powder in that NeoraFit Cleanse and Calm “tea” to help my body with its overnight repair.
Doing simple things like these can make all the difference in the world in determining your outcome – gaining that 5-20 pounds or maintaining the weight you started with but enjoying every moment of your vacation. It is all about those simple daily choices we make. Indulging in moderation or throwing caution to the wind and going wild. Me, I’d prefer the first, so I remember the trip through photos and souvenirs rather than the extra pounds that I’ll fight to take off over the next few months or years.
